Ujuzi Initiative

About us

Ujuzi means skill. We help people turn it into a living.

Ujuzi Initiative is a non-governmental organisation registered in Tanzania. We carry the social mission of the Ujuzi ecosystem: mobilising people who are too often left out, coordinating training and mentorship, safeguarding participants, governing non-profit funds and reporting results.

Vision

A digitally inclusive society where every young person can unlock their potential and earn a dignified living through technology.

Mission

To bridge the digital divide and the youth skills gap by giving disadvantaged communities the tools, training and linkages they need to take part in the online economy.

Our story

Ujuzi Initiative began as the social-innovation idea of a Tanzanian technology company: if young people could learn digital skills, reach a device and a connection, and find clients they could trust, thousands more could earn from their talent.

To give that idea its own governance and accountability, the Initiative was registered as an independent non-governmental organisation on 18 October 2025, to operate in Tanzania Mainland from its office in Dodoma. In September 2026 it completed its governance structure: Members, an independent Board of Directors, and a Management team employed by the Board.

The Ujuzi ecosystem

Three legally distinct organisations work together under written agreements. Ujuzi Initiative carries the social mission and the non-profit funds. Ujuzi-Tu Company Limited owns and operates the Ujuzi-Tu Freelance Platform, where our graduates find paid work with payments held safely in escrow. Maxie Consult Company Limited supports programme design, monitoring and evaluation. Non-profit funds are always recorded separately from marketplace revenue.

Our values

  • Inclusion We design for people most often excluded by geography, income, disability or gender.
  • Agency People are partners in their own progress, with choice, dignity and a practical path to earning.
  • Integrity Restricted funds, donor wishes, privacy, evidence and public reporting are real obligations.
  • Collaboration Government, communities, donors, educators, technology partners and employers each have a role.
  • Innovation We use technology to reach further and cost less — and test what works before we scale it.
  • Learning We measure participation, completion, earnings and inclusion, and improve from what the evidence says.

Assisting Poverty Alleviation (APAI–UDI)
